DELTA COUNTY, MI – It’s been a year since more than 200 dogs – including unborn puppies – were rescued from a “horrible” Upper Peninsula puppy mill, and the animal shelter that nursed them back to health didn’t miss the chance to check in with their forever families to commemorate the anniversary.

“It was a very happy and emotional reunion celebrating the first year of freedom for these rescued animals,” said Delta Animal Shelter director Sue Gartland. “It was completely heart warming to see happy and healthy dogs and to reunite all the people who played a role in helping save them. … Some of the dogs were unrecognizable at the reunion – they have healed so much in a year both physically and mentally. They are now living the life they deserve – full of love.”

The dogs were rescued from a puppy mill in Rock during August 2020.

In addition to a anniversary get-together, the shelter posted to Facebook with a callout for updated photos of the rescued dogs. Dozens of people shared pics of their furry family members. The post included a photo of mama Macy – looking dirty, tired and scared – shortly after she birthed a litter of 10 puppies at the shelter.

Macy was seized from the mill along with more than 100 other dogs and puppies. One hundred and two puppies were then born at shelter, officials told MLive. In total, 217 dogs and puppies were adopted out as a result of the “Rock Rescue.”

Mama Macy was fostered by Julie Dellies who ended up adopting her because the dog “most definitely picked us,” she said.

Macy’s home is in the country with her family, which includes her son Marlon and a golden retriever named Lucy that taught her “how to be a dog,” Dellies said. Macy likes to bark at cows, play in the river and wallow in muck holes.

Dellies’ daughter adopted Macy’s daughter Cammie.

“We like to joke that Cammie is city dog – and clean – while Marlon is country dog – and usually a wreck,” Dellies said.
